Showcasing Our Skills

Like just about anything last year, COVID upended our annual Craft Championships competition in 2020, but this year we are back and better than ever! The Craft Championships competition, held at the Varied Industries Building on the Iowa State Fairgrounds on Dec. 3, is an exciting event for ABC of Iowa’s Apprenticeship and Training Trust.

First, it is a highly competitive event for our current apprentices. Students qualified for the state competition this fall through exemplary scores on a written test. Craft Championship competitors placed in the Top 10 of their respective fields’ testing. This is a perfect opportunity for apprentices to showcase what they’ve learned on the job and in our training program. Observers get to watch apprentices compete in HVAC, Electrical (Commercial and Residential), and Plumbing trades. Besides prizes and awards, the winners in each trade will go on to compete, representing Iowa, in the National Craft Championships competition held in San Antonio this spring.

The Craft Championships event is also open to high school competitors from across the state. More than 150 high school students will compete for prizes and recognition in welding, electrical and carpentry competitions. There are some incredibly talented high school students and programs in Iowa and we’re pleased to offer the High School Challenges competition. These students are the future of the trades and they really showcase their skills, proving that the construction industry in Iowa has a bright future.

For all competitors and visitors, we offer a career fair, featuring ABC of Iowa members. Over 400 students are expected to attend the career fair, to meet with various ABC members, learn about career opportunities in the trades, and participate in interactive activities.  Our staff will be on-hand, offering tours of the ABC Trust’s virtual reality trailer, which is used at job fairs and high schools throughout the state to highlight real world experiences in the trades.

Great competition, career exploration, a jam-packed exciting day – what more could you ask for?
